Continuing our Do You collaboration with UAE photographer Conél van Zyl, we joined her on a shoot in Al Satwa, Dubai as she discovers the connection between dancers and their surroundings.
"I think photographing the old, abandoned and very modern sceneries of the cities has had an influence on my style. It means having fun in my favourite pair of comfortable, yet stylish jeans, going on adventures with my army jacket on, and dressing up like a 90's character with my plaid shirt. Gap gives me the opportunity to connect with my style and feel good about it."
Dubai based photographer Conél van Zyl constantly looks for creative and artistic ways to show off the world through her photography.
When heading out on a photo adventure in Old Dubai, she needs to be comfortable enough to move around in order to capture that perfect shot. "I love working with dancers, taking them out of the studios and placing them in unique backgrounds, for example, in a colorful neighbourhood".
Conél wears a pair of high-waisted black skinny jeans with a white 1969 Gap logo t-shirt, and an army green utility jacket.
Fashion stylist Samantha Francis has a t-shirt obsession: "I love the basic t-shirts from Gap. They have numerous cuts and different fabrics. I've collected a whole pile - high neck, round neck, v-neck, vintage, slightly see through - you name it."
Inspired by the festival season, she paired a vintage-look USA Gap tee with flared jeans. "This is all about feeling casual and comfortable. What goes better with a vintage T-shirt than flared pants, and messy hair to create a more bohemian look. I also love to tie my t-shirt in a knot from the front to give that little styling touch."
"Denim plays a massive role in my wardrobe. It's a must-have for long days of photo-shoots and running around on prep days. Fit and comfort are key."
Working as a fashion stylist in Dubai, Samantha Francis loves to change up her look and not stick to one style. "Being a fashion stylist is very exciting as you keep on discovering news ways to wear your clothes."
Taking her Gap 1969 denim wrap dress, she wanted to create a relaxed look. "I kept the ropy belt untied for a looser fit and I tied the top strap around my neck for a boho choker effect. This makes it very casual, and the glittery sandals make it even more fun."
"It's all about simplicity this season; some cool linen shorts with an over-sized t-shirt, and there you have it." And fashion stylist and blogger Hussein AJ from The Fashion Cult should know, keeping up to date with the latest trends is all part of the job.
But when it comes to personal style, "it's all about being original and authentic", so Hussein finds inspiration from the things around him. Currently on holiday in Belgium, a world-away from his native Dubai, he was inspired by the simpleness of his surroundings, deciding to keep his look natural, wearing an off white Gap slub t-shirt with some acorn-coloured linen-cotten everyday shorts.
'My profession influences my style because I am always in an atmosphere where looking your best is essential: all eyes are always focused on you. My inspiration comes from a few different outlets but for the past few months the main one has been culture & history. I pretty much sit and research different styles from cultures and time periods and see how I can modernize the look.'
'This look for example, is one of my favourites by far because of how simple it is. When it comes to me, my choice of tops is always a white tee or black for evening occasions. But in this case, given it was day time I went with the white!'
'Just a casual day heading to grab a bite with a friend...really liked the tennis canvas, we decided it would be a great spot to shoot so we rolled with it.'
Sometimes it's the most simple things in life what bring us the greatest enjoyment and sense of comfort! Reclining in a hammock with a good book is about as close to bliss as it gets for Maricel, and being able to enjoy the beautiful Kite beach in Dubai surroundings is simply sublime.
'I spent a relaxing afternoon down at this cosy beach enclave wearing this light and breezy ensemble. If the ever versatile 'black dress' is a women's best friend for evening wear, then the casual white t-shirt is surely the best companion to spend relaxing afternoon with. Heading out to lunch with friends or spending a day relaxing in you own company, the comfort and simple laid back styling of the loose white t-shirt is unrivalled.'
Originally from Spain and Philippines, and now living in Dubai, Maricel is a truly global citizen with a passion for all things fashion and all things digital: 'My basic principle when styling is to make sure that I feel comfortable in whatever it is that I’m wearing. Know yourself, your personal style will follow, that’s my “how-to”.
'The best thing about living in Dubai is how accessible the beach is, perfect place to do a quick yoga sesh or to meditate. Wore my new Gap Fit outfit and spent the day frolicking around the beach. I’m not always motivated to stretch my muscles, a good outfit however, is always a plus for motivation'
'Gap brings back memories from when I was in Middle School in Florida because my mom always used to take me shopping there, it was just that one brand was clean cut, fresh and had an amazing price point'. Isaac styles here a dark Indigo denim Gap shirt, enjoying a day out in Dubai's Pier 7.
DJ MoCity is all about fuss-free comfort when getting behind the turntables, so choosing Gap's Indigo bomber sweatshirt was a no-brainer. "I’ll throw it on while spinning tunes during my weekly podcast in Dubai; it’s perfect during chillier days here."
Fashion blogger Natalya of Five Five Fabulous arrived home from traveling to a surprise birthday lunch thrown by her sister. "After a long flight the last thing I wanted was to dress up so I opted for this simple Gap shirtdress."
When performing, Dubai-based DJ MoCity sticks to comfortable essentials like this Gap classic crewneck t-shirt. The highlight of his summer will be playing at the Soundwave Festival in Croatia in August.
Blogger Reem Kanj of Five Five Fabulous wears her Gap belted shirtdress for a day exploring Athens, Greece. Reem is always traveling for her blog and gravitates towards looks that are comfortable and stylish.
"I paired this relaxed belted shirtdress with ankle boots and a simple cross body for the perfect travel day outfit."
Dubai-based blogger, designer, and DJ Isaac Ode (known as Mr. Levier) wears his Gap shawl cardigan and rolled up khakis for a cool '90s look while playing golf. The look was inspired by his style icon Will Smith fused with his own personal style touches.
Dubai-based blogger, designer, and DJ Isaac Ode dresses up his Gap denim jacket and logo sweatshirt with his signature crisp sneakers and fedora.
Originally from Orlando, Isaac, known as "Mr. Levier" to many, credits his successful career to his move to Dubai at 18 years old. "My public profession as a DJ and blogger influences my style immensely. It gives me the chance to share my personal style with people through multiple platforms."
